Grammie’s visit

Friday, September 1st, 2006

Friday morning post from Sarah:

Today Jack got to spend some more time with his Grammie Hope. He met her the day he was born and once a day for several days thereafter, they’re old pals. Also he has already accumulated most of my baby stuff, including several blankets, and more importantly a complete library. Jack will be hearing all about Pierre this evening.

Jack also got to meet his Uncle Zeke for the first time today. I am not kidding, this kid has Uncles named: Jesse, Zeke and Roland. All we have to do is add an Uncle named Cooter and we’d have a TV show.

Before having all these visitors Jack scared the crap out of me by having several Desats. The nurses continue to be blase about it. They’ll stroll over to see if he’ll bring himself out, or if they need to tickle his feet to make him remember to breath. Apparently this is a normal Preemie thing to do and typically a reaction to overstimulation. The fact that he only does this for his mother does not bode well…On the good news front, he has gained more weight and is up in the mid 900 gram range. We’re slowing inching back up to his birth weight of 1010 grams which will be cause for real celebration.

The downside for today: Jack will need a blood transfusion to up his red blood cell count (more on this later, along with an update on blood cord banking). Also, he did not tolerate the breastmilk very well and they have had to discontinue feedings for now.

I am now back at CC’s and in bed. My husband has developed a new speciality where he berates me for over-doing it and then accuses me of not eating properly. Charming.

Therefore, because I am NOT ALLOWED, Arch is going back over to the hospital this afternoon to see Jack again, we’ll have more pictures and another update very soon…
