Nudge, puppy style.

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

In the fine tradition of my people Sidney is a nudge.

He is not content to just let you sit still, you know, after a long day. He needs to be right next to you, head on your knee, nudging…”pet me,” his big brown eyes say.

He runs full tilt at you so he can nudge more effectively. He has not yet learned how to put on the brakes.

He plays exceptionally well with Jack, both of them leaping to get bubbles -although sometimes Sidney and his big galumphing paws accidentally run into Jack…My son has become quite adept at ducking a flying Sidney, he gets down real close to the floor and Sidney flies over head. It’s like a well coordinated circus act.

Sidney recently met one of his people, a Treeing Walker , a lady coon-hound who had just moved to the big stinky from Portland Oregon. The baying could be heard down the street. This same tone can be heard when we’re doing people stuff, putting Jack to bed, reading, using the toilet.

Did I mention he is a nudge?

Values

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

As a parent, one of the most important responsibilities that I have is to impart good values on Jack. Its very important to me that he be able to come to his own conclusions and generally, I feel like I’m there to steer him the right direction. However, there are some issues that I feel very strongly about and today I laid down the law on an issue that is near and dear to my heart:

Soup.

Progresso Chickarina is the best canned soup that there is, period. Its not up for discussion. It’s my favorite soup, and it’s going to be Jack’s favorite too. This is one of those things that I just cant compromise on and if he grows up to think that Campbells Tomato is better, I’ll be forced to disown him.

Al little background:

Chickarina

My love for this soup started at a very young age, but it wasn’t until I was about 22 years old and more closely inspecting the can that I noticed that its not called “Chickenarina”. I’ve been calling it that for as long as I can remember, and it still drives my dad crazy. I’ve thought about petioning Progresso to change to name to Chickenarina and I’m certain that my brother Roland would be the first signature.

So anyway, Jack tried it today and seemd to like it, but he didn’t love it.  And really, what’s not to love? The meatballs? Who doesnt like meatballs? The pasta, or the delicious chicken broth? No way! its impossible not to love it, and believe me, he’s gonna. I don’t care if I have to feed it to him exclusively for the next 10 years, he’s gonna love it and thats final.

Valentines day for my babies.

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Well, its Valentines day, again. It’s just a scam designed by the greeting card companies, you know.

Anyway, some people around here really like Valentines day, which means that I like Valentines day. A lot.

To celebrate, I got a sitter all by myself and we’re going out to dinner tomorrow night. Pretty much what you’d expect. So to really put things over the pink-and-flowery-and-chocolate-greeting-card-top, Jack and I made a little video to try and tell the Mommy how we feel.

Here goes.

The Fork.

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Having mastered shoveling Ikea brand Swedish Meatballs into his mouth with his hands, yesterday Jack decided it was time to join polite society and master the fine art of using utensils. As you can plainly see, he is a complete master. Also, just after I turned off the camera, he picked up some chopsticks and caught a fly in mid air, Mr. Miyagi style.
