Work vs. Life - what is this “balance” you speak of?

As many of you know (or as I’ve whined about several times over the past couple of days) I have been suffering from a cold.

Interestingly, Jack is suffering from a cold too. Oh and his zillionith (okay, 3rd) ear infection, in so many months.

Last night I took some cold medicine which put me totally out. I was zonked. At around 1 am, when Jack’s Motrin wore off, he apparently woke up and started hollering…

In my medicated slumber I distinctly remembering shaking my husband and informing him:

“it’s bad client service to let the baby cry! Can you handle this situation appropriately?”

I think my work life is *maybe* seeping into my personal life - thoughts?

Winter Words

Its been cold here in the city. Damn cold. So cold that my eyes hurt from the multiple playing of yo gabba gabba.

We do what we can to stay entertained during the weekends. Today we went to Ikea. In Paramus. On purpose.

You see, Sidney (or “nee” as Jack calls him) shares some similarities with his predecessor. He likes to pee in Jack’s room. In the same spot Hollis’ seemed to prefer. So, without over analyzing, Arch and I decided the boy needed a new rug. And so off to New Jersey we went. Arch will post separately on the joys of house-training a puppy in NYC.

Jack took to this Ikea much better than the one in Elizabeth. This one had these little kiosks for kids to play with so, when he had enough, we could just put him in front of kid friendly totem pole and continue with our shopping excursion.

Those Swedes, they’re quite clever.

Jack would turn around ever once in while from batting at large turning objects to smile and just you know, make sure we hadn’t strayed too far… He’s turning into such a little person these days, it’s kind of amazing the changes that are taking place.

Besides the mobility, jack’s vocabulary is expanding. The words are completely unintelligible, but they sound kind of like this:

“do -do” - which clearly means doggy.
“bah - do” - bad dog…hmm - where do you think he got that one from?
“ligh” - referring to light-switches…not lights.
“Bird” - clear as day, very weird.
“buh-buh” - accompanied by some hand licking, which is Jack’s version of blowing a kiss…enough to melt your heart.
“i did it” - but he strings it together so it’s all one word “ididit!” He says it to himself through out the day. Super cute.

Oh. And he signs: All done, more, milk, doggy

The kid is a super genius, I may be biased but I am just saying, my boy, he blows me away.

Walking people, walking.

I don’t have any idea who signed the approval form for this, but apparently it happened. The boy is walking.

Well technically, it’s mostly behind the super-sweet alligator walker thingy in the video. Though, he has actually taken one or two free-standing steps, but I am unable to provide you with any video proof of that, yet.

On a related note, we don’t acknowledge when Jack falls down, unless it looks like he’s actually hurt himself. The result is that when he falls or bonks his head, which is pretty damn often,  he just dusts himself off and keeps on truckin’.

Pride doesn’t even begin to cover it.

We’ve been saying for the past 2 months, “oh, it will happen at any moment,” and it never does. You see, Jack is a power crawler. I have found myself running to keep up with him…as he is crawling. Why would he need to walk? He’s got all the ambulatory skills he needs and the callouses on his knees to prove it.

But today? When he was reaching for a wayward kazoo that his mother did not leave at baby level on the coffee table but instead brazenly moved next to her on the sofa? Two very clear, very non-supported, very drunken, little baby steps.

I have witnesses (Karen our OT was over) and everything.

So, at approximately 16 1/2 months actual, 13 1/2 months adjusted, our boy took his first steps.

Pride doesn’t even begin to cover it.

We’ve added a new member to the family.
