Marking his turf

When I started my official maternity leave a few weeks ago, Hollis was beside himself with joy. He would zip around the apartment his tail held up high, leading me around on our walks. Finally, FINALLY no one would ever leave him home alone ever again. You could watch his doggy brain struggle to process the beauty of his situation.

And then Jack came home.

Hollis quickly realized I was not staying home to take care of him, no, I was staying home to tend to the brand new alpha dog. This change in hierarchy did not go over well.

I started to worry about Hollis. He was depressed, and a sad beagle, ack it’s just too much for the heart to take. I was beginning to wonder if he would ever snap out of it.

Until today…

That’s Hollis in the bassinet of Jack’s Stroller. And no. I did not put him in there.

Yeah, No doubt about it. Hollis is experiencing the classic displacement that older children experience when a new babay comes home. ASfter a while, ( a very short while ZI suspect) the novelty wears off, and the reality that life will never be as he knew it beofre, has entered into his consciousness. A couple of recommendations:
    a) the couch…for dogs, that is.
    b) family play therapy
    c) never take your eyes off that hound, even for a second, as you never know what’s on a crafty beagle’s mind.
All I know is that Jack is a gorgeous….winning child, with a mile wide reason to have a great guardian like Hollis…..give it time, it’ll all work out.

Hope you both are getting just a little bit o’ rest…………………
I can’t wait for Katie to see Jack! when she comes back from the wilds of St.Andrews!
    Love to you,
    J

    Hollis is thinking:

“This thing is nice. Did you bring one for the small shaven man as well?”

Our cat Benny did the same thing. He got realy interested in Sophia it’s a shame he went to Kitty HEaven way to early. They would have gotten along great.

    Jack is the man!!!
