sad day

Jack’s fine. He’s great even. He’s 5 pounds 6 ounces and the Dr’s just walk past him during rounds and say things like “he’s a grower,” and then keep going. It’s awesome.

No, the sad day was for a new nicu family, the one that Arch mentioned last weeked. When I spoke with them they were due at any moment with their twins and were scared of the road ahead. Jack’s story gave them hope.

Well, the twins were born yesterday at 27 weeks, 3 days. 3 days later than Jack. A little girl, 2 pounds, 1 oz. and a little boy at 2 pounds, 4 oz., 1 oz. bigger than Jack was.

Today I walk into the NICU to see one of the grandmother’s sitting down in the hall, when I congratulated her, she told me that the little boy had just died.

I didn’t know what to say, but I think I stammered something horribly inappropriate and then fled to go see Jack, because seeing him made me feel much better.

The nicu is a sad place when babies die, it has only happened three times during Jack’s stay and the staff is very good at keeping the tragedy from the other parents. But today, the tragedy was too close.

    Sara,
We all are sharing your sadness and your sense of relief that Jack is one very luckiest of boys.
And by the way, Emily’s hat is so charming on Jack….he is the cutest pumpkin ever!
    Love to you three,

    J
