Super Sunday Mega Photo Video Mass Update Freakout.

Sunday, October 15th, 2006

Well, yesterday was the first day that we haven’t posted in Jack’s whole life. I suspect it won’t be the last. The good news is that it paves the way for a Super Sunday Mega Photo Video Mass Update Freakout.

Yesterday, I finally Kangarooed with Jack for a while. It was pretty awesome. As he was laying on my bare chest his breathing started to match mine and his oxygen saturation was through the roof. It made me feel like a dad. Jack knew who I was, and he was totally relaxed and cooing the whole time.

Now, on to today.

Jack ate his entire afternoon meal from a bottle today. 35cc’s. Ok, more like 33 with 2cc’s of spit-up, but still, that’s pretty good for a negative 6 week old. Sarah did a little more kangarooing with him, which he really really seems to like. Aunt Katherine stopped by and said hello. She came bearing gifts in the form of her world famous quiche. Sadly, Jack isn’t quite ready for solid food, plus real preemies don’t eat quiche. His parents however, do.

Moving right along… Below, please find the aforementioned photo video freakout.

FOUR POUND BABY!!

Friday, October 13th, 2006

We have crossed another threshold. Today Jack gained 35 grams for a grand total of 1825. Holy moly. Now he really is like an oven stuffer roaster. They’re fattening him up so that we can bring him home and roast him.

Sarah tried to repeat yesterdays magic with the bottle the afternoon, but Jack was having none of it. As soon as he saw the nipple heading his way he clammed right up. But he is a little young to be trying the bottle anyway, so I’m not to worried. I mean he is my son, and I really have no problems with the nipple.

Anyway… we’re hoping to have another go at it tomorrow, and of course, we’ll keep you posted.

The Winner…

I am bursting with pride for another man in my life. My younger brother is headed to his first big job following his graduate studies in the UK. For those of you just tuning in, Zeke has been classically trained as a stone carver. He came back from the UK and promptly broke his shoulder, thus preventing him from picking up any of his stone carving tools for several months.

The first thing Zeke carved once his shoulder allowed was this:

the-whale

isn’t it the most awesome thing ever!?

These pics are a little old, but really, how old can they be? The kid has only been here for 46 days.

Jack ate 15cc’s from the bottle today. He didn’t really gain any weight today, due to… well… you know. But the word on the street is that once he hits 1800cc’s they start thinking about the step-down room.

Wow. That sounds like planning for the future.

I like the sound of the future.

Does this look like Margaret or what?

A question in passing…

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

So while Sarah was at the hospital today, two things happened. One on purpose, and the other… well keep reading.

So one of the big tests that Jack has to pass before he can come home is he has to be able to breathe and eat at the same time. Now, I know that for some of you this isn’t much of a challenge, while others of you have mastered the art of drinking wine while laying completely flat on your back, but remember, Jack is much smaller than you.

So imagine my surprise when I got an IM from Sarah saying that Jack ate 5cc’s of milk from a bottle. While breathing. Like he was eating AND breathing. Like at the same time like.

So that’s pretty major. But the hits just keep on coming. So, Sarahs’ in there, talkin’ to the nurses, and one of ‘em asks “So is everything ready for Jack at home?”….

WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?

What did they mean “home”? Like, I was thinking that he would just stay at the NICU ’till he was 18. Is that not how this works? Crap. I wish someone had mentioned this to me earlier.

Now its not happening anytime soon, and like Sarah said, they only give us like two days notice. But it’s pretty radical that its even being mentioned at all. And particularly since it’s usually so hard to get anything out of the nurses. That must be a good sign. I hope.

Lastly, I’m re-posting this picture. I realize that it amounts to a rerun, but it’s friggin’ awesome and this is our blog and I can do whatever I want. So there.

Sacked out

Oh. He now weighs 1795 grams, and he is very very close to the four pound mark. Sweet!
