One less wire (oh and negative 8 weeks)

Today we saw Jack in the evening. We are both still feeling a little under the weather so we didn’t do a lot of interaction with him, and besides, what kind of crazy person wakes up a sleeping baby? So we just said hi, talked quietly to him for a bit and checked his stats with the night staff.

Jack actually had a new nurse tonight. She gave us an interesting piece of news. Jack has one less wire on him. That’s right, the sensor that monitors his body temperature has been removed. Now they set his isollette temp and make sure he’s not dipped below the specified temp when they change his diaper. No more constant monitoring and one less wire stuck to him. This is the begining of him being able to maintain his own body temperature, a huge milestone for preemies.

Also? He weighs 1625 grams.

And yes, Christina did visit, but the pictures are on my husband’s camera and he is totally sacked out next to me. What kind of crazy person wakes a sleeping husband?

3.5 pounds? That would be like me gaining…yikes! One less wire is a huge thing and I can’t wait till he’s on the cannula and off that giant contraption with all the tape. Definitely something I think he can manage by his 6 week birthday. Sorry, Jack, you got a bunch of people expecting a lot of you but we think you’re more than capable. We’ll ease up a little when you get yourself out of that NICU.

    xoxo,

One less wire. His friends in the MAfia will be very happy.

This is so wonderul that he’s just powering along and growing and breathing and crying and of course pooping and peeing. Deifnitely going above everyone’s expectations.

    Woot!

    Jack,
Man oh man, we don’t talk for a few days and suddenly you’re up to 24ccs, one less wire and crying. Excellent progress on all fronts, for sure and I know you are working your tushie off, sometimes literally, and know that I’m proud of you, but now that you’re a little over 5 weeks old, and negative 8 weeks, there are some things we need to discuss.
1.) a few weeks ago we talked about getting up to 35ccs of milk. Now, I know this plan was changed based on the advice of your doctors, but I think we can get back on track now. I think it’s completely reasonable to shoot for that by the end of next week, shortly before your 7 week birthday. Let me know what you think about that. As Aunt Lucy says, the expectations are high and maybe we’ll cut you some slack a little bit later, but somehow I doubt that. I hate to put too much pressure on you, but given your performance, it is what it is.
2.) I know it’s not exactly a party for you to have tape all over your face from the CPAP, not to mention all the other tape that is on your body to hold other things in places so it’s no wonder you want them all off and are slightly cranky about that. Trust me, you’ll get there and soon, I think by the end of the week, but in the interim– you should ask the nurses when they are changing the tape to put a little Vitamin E oil on the skin around the adhesive. Well at least, in my experience it helps, but I’m sure they already do something similar. Just in case they don’t, there you go. Have they politely asked you yet if you’ve “passed gas” ?
3.) What oh what is going on with the nose job? I haven’t heard anything about it, maybe you don’t need it, but let me know what you decided.
4.) I hate to alarm you, but I have to tell you about this sooner rather than later, maybe your mom and dad have mentioned it. See there is this thing called a job that you will need to get and you’ll need to do all sorts of things for it. Just wanted to give you the heads up because when you ask for a car, they will say, get a job. Can I have more allowance, get a job. I can help you with that later. Just give me a ring.

So that’s it for today. The above mentioned job required me to be off schedule last week, which I know you hate and so do I, but I’m back on track now.

    Give me a call.
    love you
    Auntie V

p.s. I need to get a flu shot before I see you again – I’m working on it. That and the stop smoking thing.
